Famous Vegans

Veganism is definitely gaining in popularity with many famous vegans in the public eye helping to promote a cruelty free lifestyle. I have tried to keep this list as accurate as possible. It's quite confusing when you are trying to list celebrity vegans, as some might try the vegan diet for a while and then go back to other diets. As far as I'm aware, Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler and others are not vegan, and neither is Leona Lewis (who is bringing out a vegan clothing range but still eats honey apparently). However, unless they contact me (doubtful), I cannot say for sure. Martin Shaw (his vegan recipes are great by the way) is another actor who is often quoted as being vegan but from my research, it seems that he is almost vegan so isn't on this list. Another well known advocate of animal rights issues is Stella McCartney, but as far as I know, she isn't a vegan. Neither is Avril Levigne and shock horror, Morrissesy appears to be a vegetarian and not a vegan. Bill Clinton also talks about how a vegan diet helped him to lose weight and get his general health back on track, but I don't think he is fully vegan. Anyway, we have many definite vegan celebrities and general famous vegans out there and this is my list below which is updated when the information becomes available.

Bryan Adams Legendary Canadian rock singer Bryan Adams has been a vegan since 1989. The great thing about Adams is he is also a supporter of animal rights and isn't afraid to speak out on their behalf. You can see an interview he did with Peta here.

He speaks about being a vegetarian but he means 100% vegetarian which is the true meaning of veganism. This article talks about what you can find in his shopping basket.

Casey Affleck You can hear actor Casey Affleck here talking about why he went vegan. Quote by Affleck: "When people ask me why I don't eat meat or any other animal products, I say, 'Because they are unhealthy and they are the product of a violent and inhumane industry".

You can also read about how he raised criticisms of the animal agriculture industry here and how TV networks refused to air them.

Pamela Anderson Pamela Anderson Is a vocal supporter of animal rights and veganism. You can see her here launching a vegan milkshake and here you can read her on the campaign trail in Israel. She is also on record as saying that a vegan diet has helped her to manage Hepatitis C. She is on record as saying that whichever country she is in, she will always try to promote rights for animals.

Kristen Bell Kristen Anne Bell is an American actress who, along with her fellow actor husband Dax Shepard, decided to turn vegan after watching the excellent film Forkes Over Knives. She is quoted as saying: "It's more about the health benefits than the ethics. But it’s compounded by the fact that I love animals and feel better not eating them." Kristen issued a statement through her publicist that said, "Forks Over Knives outlines an extremely compelling approach to the prevention of heart disease and cancer." More Information.

Mayim Bialik Real Vegan Alert - American actress Mayim Bialik is noted as being an ethical vegan rather than a dietary vegan (eg: a real vegan). When Mayim’s stylist said, "Now I just need to get you a nail color,” Mayim responded with, "No, I need to get the vegan nail polish". The NY Times piece then says that she went on to give a "brief tutorial on a dye, found in some cosmetics, made from crushed bugs" (cochineal). More Information.

Russell Brand British comedian and actor Russell Brand is a brand spanking new famous vegan. He became vegetarian at the age of 14 and became vegan at the end of 2011 after watching the film Forkes Over Knives (UK | USA). You can see his announcement on Twitter here.

Dax Shepard Another Forkes Over Knives convert to veganism, actor Dax Shepard turned to veganism with his actress wife Kristen Bell at the beginning of 2012 after watching the aforementioned film. The Parenthood star is quoted as saying: "It's nothing like the pill in The Matrix but damn good, like 15 percent across the board in every respect," he said. "I sleep 15 percent better. My allergies are at least 15 percent better. I have fewer body aches. My skin looks better. I'm never starving, and I never need to ride the couch feeling completely full and disgusting."

I love the part in this video where she says animals should have the right to be left alone.

Thomas Dekker Thomas Dekker is an American actor and musician (John Conner in the blockbuster movie "The Terminator"). Dekker has been a vegan from the age of 13. If you scroll down on this page you can read about why he went vegan. I'm not sure about Dekkers commentary on this video though. He seems to have gone down the welfare route which kind of contradicts as to why he is a vegan.

Portia de Rossi Portia de Rossi is a well known American actress and another well known vegan. Along with her partner, Ellen Lee Degeneras, de Rossi has invested in a vegan restaurant. Apparently her "aha" moment happened when she and Degeneras started living on a farm in California. She says: "Now I don't judge other beings that way - every animal has its own intelligence and sensitivities. They're all lovely, worthwhile, and deserving of our respect".

John Feldmann John Feldmann is the leadsinger of well known band "Goldfinger" and is also an outspoken of veganism and animal rights. According to Wikipedia, Feldmann went vegetarian after seeing the film "Babe". In this video he talks quite openly about veganism and animal rights and says he was vegetarian for two years and then went vegan after realising how he would "pet a dog and eat a pig". He started doing some research and took it from there.

Jared Leto Jared Leto is an American musician turned actor and producer who is said to be a vegan. However, on his bio here it says he is a lacto ovo vegetarian. I'm fairly sure he is a vegan though which is why I have added him to the famous vegans list here.

He posted something on his Twitter account about being a vegan but if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.
